Williams, 43, is making her 24th US Open appearance. The former world No.1 has reached at least the semifinals here 9 times. Injuries have limited her schedule, but she remains a fierce competitor. Tonight she faces Belgian qualifier Greet Minnen, seeking her first major upset. But Williams’ experience gives her the edge in a close 3-setter.

Alcaraz returns to the site of his breakthrough title last year, when at 19 he became the youngest US Open men’s winner. Now 20, he’s the world No.1 after a stellar 2022 season. His thrilling 5-set Wimbledon final win over Djokovic showed his grit under pressure. He starts against left-handed German Dominik Koepfer, who reached the 2019 US Open 4th round. But Koepfer will likely be overwhelmed on Ashe stadium against the defending champ, who advances in straight sets.

Other top names in action include major champs Medvedev, Murray, Wawrinka, Sabalenka and Krejcikova. Plus fan favorites like Monfils, Isner, Svitolina, Pegula, Keys and Sinner. With so much star power, Day 2 promises more electrifying tennis and bold shot-making under the bright lights. The champions will need steely focus to handle the pressure and avoid any upsets.
